Great Hearts Do Good

“We’ve had customers and staff who have had to rely on Ronald McDonald House when their children were sick,” said Dana, director of operations for an independently owned Great Clips® salon in Illinois. So, when Dana and her team decided they wanted to give back to their local community, Ronald McDonald House (RMH) was a strong option.

“They believe in keeping families together when a child is going through a serious medical crisis,” said Dana. “Great Clips® is also a family-focused brand and we liked the idea of choosing a nonprofit organization with shared beliefs.”

The salon team decided to volunteer by preparing a meal for the RMH families. They quickly got to work planning the meal and shopping for groceries. When it was time to cook, they divided duties in the RMH kitchen, prepping the food alongside one another and sharing cooking tips. “We were respectful and mindful of what the families were going through,” Dana said. “But we also were able to laugh and have fun. We had a great time cooking side by side!”

As Dana reflected on the experience, she shared a sense of pride over the act of kindness her salon team extended to families in need. “It made our team stronger, because we got the opportunity to get to know each other on a different level,” she said. “The team said it made them feel like they were part of something important, and I was able to see just how talented they are. They have impressive skills inside and outside of the salon!”

The benefits of the volunteer experience didn’t stay at RMH; they impacted the salon culture, as well. “Giving back feels great, and a salon team that contributes their time to help people in need can’t help but bring that feeling back into the salon. The customers feel it, and the stylists do, too.” Dana added, “We’re already planning our next visit.”
