Building Confidence and a Nest Egg

Natalia sits on the hood of her new Bronco, smiling

Key Takeaways

  • At franchised Great Clips salons, ongoing skill coaching and encouragement help stylists keep improving, gain confidence over time, and build a career that fits their life.
  • A consistent flow of customers and strong tip potential can help stylists earn steadily, save with intention, and achieve meaningful milestones—like paying off a car or building savings.

When Natalia walked into a Great Clips salon for her very first shift in 2021, she lasted exactly one day before fear got the better of her. She quit that evening, convinced a busy salon wasn't the right fit for a newly graduated cosmetologist who could barely bring herself to strike up a conversation with strangers.

Fast-forward a few years, and that same young stylist now shows up to work excited to see her coworkers, chat with customers, and pick up her clippers. Natalia recently paid off her brand-new car ahead of schedule and is already building savings toward her next goal. The transformation didn't happen overnight, but it started the moment a Great Clips general manager named Tami refused to let Natalia give up on herself.

A Winding Road Back to the Chair

Natalia graduated from high school in 2019 and headed straight for cosmetology school. She finished her program in October 2020, in the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic. After landing a job at her local Great Clips salon, the anxiety that had been quietly building within Natalia boiled over.

"I was really shy," she says. "I felt so nervous!"

After her first day, Natalia quit and spent the next year and a half trying to find her footing in other corners of the industry, but it was emotionally draining. Needing a break from hair entirely, Natalia took a retail job at a boutique.

That's when Tami came back into the picture. The Great Clips general manager tracked Natalia down and asked her a simple question: “What are you doing with your life?” Tami then asked Natalia if she was ready to give Great Clips another shot.

Natalia said yes.

The Team That Changed Everything

Natalia has now been at the same Great Clips location for almost three years and credits the turnaround almost entirely to the people around her.

"Tami knew I was shy," Natalia says. "And she helped me a lot. She even helped me talk to my coworkers!" The team clicked in a way Natalia hadn't experienced before. They're a mix of different personalities, she says, but that's part of what makes it work.

“They are always hyping me up!" Natalia says. "My Great Clips team understands me and has helped me get to where I am right now."

Today, going to work feels fun. "I get excited to see the people I work with. I know that they have my back. It's easy to work with them,” Natalia says. “I like doing haircuts and I have more confidence."

Turning Tips Into a Paid-Off Car

Natalia's confidence isn't limited to what happens behind the salon chair. The financial habits she's developed since returning to Great Clips tell their own story.

In October 2024, she bought a car, and from the moment she drove it off the lot, Natalia was determined to pay it off fast. By January 2026, just 15 months later, she had achieved her goal.

Natalia’s method was straightforward but disciplined: she saved nearly every cash tip she earned and transferred her tip card earnings directly into her bank account. Every month, she made the largest car payment she could manage.

What Comes Next

With the car behind her, Natalia has set her sights on the next milestone: saving enough to move out on her own. She currently lives at home with her parents, which, she points out, has been a strategic advantage. No rent, no bills, and the maximum ability to save.

Natalia's also getting some friendly pressure from the people who know her best. Tami, her salon manager Glenda, her coworkers, and her sister have all been nudging her toward investing for retirement. She hasn't pulled the trigger yet. "Maybe tomorrow," she laughs.

The question is: can a salon job support real financial goals? Natalia will tell you her answer is parked in her driveway.
