More Balance, Less Burnout

“I’ve been with a Great Clips® salon for more than 30 years,” said Michele, a stylist in Florida. “I was full time, and spent 21 years as a salon manager, but for the past few years, I’ve been averaging 15 to 20 hours per week. I love it!”

Michele’s story is a common one. According to the Labor Department, 13.9% of all workers chose to work part time in 2023- the highest percentage in decades. Great Clips independently owned and operated franchised salons reflect the trend. “Work-life balance is important to everyone in 2024,” said Michelle Bates, the franchisee who owns and operates the salon where Michele works. “After Covid, many stylists no longer wanted to work 40+ hours per week.”

It's easy to see why flexibility and balance are attractive to workers. Whether they need to care for children or aging parents, need space for mental health or quality of life, or are pursuing a hobby or a way to earn extra income, a part-time role gives people the freedom to create a schedule that meets their different needs.

“I’m part-time because this is my semi-retirement,” said Michele. “That’s one of the many nice things about Great Clips®. It’s not all or nothing. In fact, I could even work every now and then after I retire!”

Franchisee Michelle agreed, “Often, our part-time stylists will pick up hours for other stylists who are on vacation or need time off. We also have temporary positions for stylists that would like to be on-call periodically during promotions or other high-volume times. Because our part-time and temporary stylists have all worked with us and know the Great Clips® system, we can count on them to fit right in and impress our customers!”

For now, stylist Michele’s semi-retirement is going so well, she’s planning to keep it going. “I love our customers and my salon team,” she said. “The freedom I have is so important to me. I feel fulfilled.”

As a franchisee, Michelle sees the benefit of having both full-time and part-time employees. “Our full-time stylists really appreciate the part-time stylists because they help us keep customer wait times low, and everything moving smoothly.”

And the part-time stylists? “They come in, work hard, and make as much money as possible,” Michelle said. “They are go-getters!”
